SEISMIC VULNERABILITY OF EXISTING MASONRY BUILDINGS, PROJECT SeismoWall

 

TOPIC

The area of interest are masonry buildings, constructed in the first half of the last century, currently occupied as public institutions from the fields of education, administration, judiciary and culture. Definition of a methodology for assessment of their vulnerability is one of the expected results. Particular attention in the realization of the set target is to define seismic hazard for the territory of the Republic of Macedonia.

 

SCOPE

the ultimate goal is to produce vulnerability curves for typical building classes for the territory of the Republic of Macedonia.


 

Project outline

Taking into consideration large number of existing public buildings (mainly masonry) built before the actual provisions for seismic design were in power, mitigation of the seismic risk is possible only if information for their vulnerability is gathered. Most of the existing buildings built before existence of seismic codes are masonry buildings. In the country, many public institutions have their premises located in masonry buildings, such as:

  • Educational - kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, universities,
  • Administrative - ministries, local governments, courts,
  • Cultural - museums, archives and etc.

In the frame of the proposed research, twenty buildings are selected, all built between the end of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, which based on their actual usage can be classified in the above categories of public institutions.

The selected buildings according to their architecture, structural system and materials used, represent typical examples of the chosen class of buildings. In the first phase, identification of their dynamic charactersitics based on ambient vibration tests is planned. Moreover, their structural capacity shall be assess according to actual codes. In the second phase, analytical methodology for determination of the seismic vulnerability funsctions for each building will be applied.

Important part of the analytical methodology is definition of the seismic hazard in Republic of Macedonia. For that purpose, available data from the Seismological observatory will be used, and depending on the quality of those data, method of defining of the seismic hazard for the chosen structures will be adopted.

 

Work packages

The activities within this research project are organized in four work packgaes (WP):
WP 1: Selection and analysis of representative buildings

WP 2: Experimental investigations

WP 3: Correlation of models based on measured and simulated structural response of the buildings

WP 4: Determination of seismic fragility curves for the selected buildings

 

Expected results

  • Determination of masonry mechanical properties, Identification of the dynamic charactersitics and model calibration with the help of ambient vibration tests.
  • Assesment of the seismic capacity of the selected buildings according to the actual regulations, Code of Technical Regulations for the Design and Construction of Buildings in Seismic Regions from 1981 (PIOVSP'81).
  • Definition of a methodology for determination of the seismic fragility curves of a typical masonry building in Macedonia, by including:
    • definition of the seismic hazard
    • selection od a method for nonlinear analysis of masonry buildings
    • selection of damage indicators and damage threshold values
  • Application of the chosen methodology to all selected structures and calculation of fragility curves.
  • Comparison of the calculated fragility curves of particular buildings with available fragility curves for masonry structural classes.

 

The project results will be systemized and presented in a monograph for seismic vulnerability od masonry buildings.
